Heed It Well, Ye Pantheists!


In 1982, Les Blank made a documentary about Werner Herzog and the production of his film Fitzcarraldo.  Filmed in the jungles of South America, the filming of Fitzcarraldo has become legendary for not only its audacious vision, but also for the seemingly endless series obstacles it had to overcome.  I believe seven people died shooting this flim, which may have something to do with Herzog’s perception of nature and the jungle:

    Nice post. Herzog is a like cinema’s antihero. Both Fitzcarraldo and Burden of Dreams (said documentary on the making of) are great flicks. If i recall, that particular clip is prefaced by the mounting tension of on location shooting in the midst of the Amazonian wilderness. I think the clip takes it a bit out of context. That isn’t to say he doesn’t have an interesting notion about nature. Recommended viewing:
